A CENTURY OF MAZDA: 100 YEARS OF INNOVATION
November 25 2020, Yorkdale Dufferin Mazda
The world was a very different place when Mazda was born 100 years ago. Just like the outside world has changed, so has what’s going on inside our cars.
The auto manufacturer’s history of innovation has created vehicles today that feel incredibly connected to the road and seem to instantaneously translate the driver’s intentions behind the wheel into action. Mazdas can scan the road, then process and respond to this information to keep everybody safer.
Let’s celebrate the auto maker’s 100th birthday by looking at some of Mazda’s most impressive feats of innovation.
SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY
For the last 100 years, Mazda has been based in Hiroshima. From developing history’s first vehicle with a rotary engine, Mazda has gone back to the basics of what a car should be and how it should drive.
Rather than cram new vehicles with fancy technologies, the underlying approach itself has changed. The result: the SKYACTIV family of technologies.
The SKYACTIV-D engine has the world’s lowest diesel-engine compression ratio. It’s a clean, highly-efficient diesel engine that doesn’t need expensive nitrogen oxide after-treatments to comply with global exhaust regulations.
The SKYACTIV-G direct-injection gasoline engine has the world’s highest gasoline engine compression ratio of 14.0:1. Enjoy a 15% increase in fuel efficiency and torque thanks to high compression and combustion. Innovations like the 4-2-1 exhaust system, cavity pistons, multi-hole injectors, and others lead to this game-changing compression ratio.
Mazda has found a way to reduce “knocking,” abnormal combustion in which the air-fuel mixture ignites prematurely because of exposure to high temperature and pressure.
If you aren’t much of a gearhead yourself, just know that Mazda Canada offers vehicles with serious innovation and history under the hood.
SKYACTIV BODIES AND CHASSIS
Modern SKYACTIV bodies and chassis have been overhauled to be lighter without sacrificing crash safety performance. In new vehicles, the SKYACTIV-BODY is 8% lighter and 30% more rigid.
Vehicles with this technology are lighter on their feet and more durable.
SMART SAFETY: I-ACTIVSENSE
One hundred years ago, it’d be impossible for someone to believe the safety technology that would come to exist a century later. Yet, here we are.
The i-ACTIVSENSE series of safety technology relies on milliwave radars and cameras to help the driver recognize road hazards, and avoid them when possible or minimize the impact when they can’t be avoided.
This type of technology helps all road users stay safe, whether you’re changing lanes on the highway or stuck in stop-and-go urban traffic. Sharing the road with cyclists, pedestrians, and others can be stressful. Many new Mazda cars are loaded with i-ACTIVSENSE features that make driving more fun and stress-free, and don’t only keep you safer, they protect everyone on the road.
INFOTAINMENT
Finally, Mazda vehicles have redesigned infotainment systems that make it easy to use your smartphone safely behind the wheel. It doesn’t matter whether you have an Apple or Android smartphone.
Access your music, stay connected, and navigate easily with Mazda’s modern infotainment systems.
If you had told Mazda engineers in Hiroshima 100 years ago that today’s vehicles would have this kind of advanced technology, would they have believed you? Yes, for it was their hard work and vision that created Mazda’s DNA in the first place.
